May 2026 Volunteer Day Highlights
Lokowaka brings together people from different places, backgrounds, and generations through shared work and care for the land. We appreciate our volunteers so much. From tedious hand weeding to clearing dense overgrowth with a sickle, every effort helps restore Lokowaka.
この土地をともに守り育む活動を通して、ロコワカは、さまざまな場所から集まる人々や、異なる世代の人たちを結びつけてくれます ボランティアの皆さんに心から感謝しています。地道な手作業の草取りから、鎌を使った生い茂る草の除去まで、そのひとつひとつの作業がロコワカの再生につながっています。

March 2026 Highlights
Lokowaka Pond’s water source is a unique blend of high-elevation water from the slopes of Mauna Loa and lower-elevation rainfall that percolates through and recharges the unconfined basalt aquifer, shaping the pond’s dynamic hydrology.
Lokowaka Pond の水源は、マウナロアの高地からの水と、山腹で降った雨水が玄武岩の帯水層へと浸透したものです。
February 2026 Highlights
At ʻĀina Hoʻōla Initiative, our work is grounded in hands-on stewardship. Every workday, every volunteer, and every muddy step forward supports the long healing of this special place.
湿地は、陸と水が出会い、いのちと文化、コミュニティを支える大切な場所です。ロコワカの湿地とロコ・イアは、自然の回復力と学びを私たちに教えてくれます。一人ひとりの手と一歩が、この場所の長い癒しにつながっています。

2026: Makahiki Kuleana Kahakai
2026 has been declared the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana (Makahiki Kuleana Kahakai). Launched on January 9 by Governor Josh Green, this statewide campaign invites communities across Hawaiʻi to honor our shared responsibility to care for the coastlines where land, sea, and people meet. As we enter our sixth year of restoration work at Lokowaka, we are grateful to be part of this collective effort to mālama our coastal environments for generations to come.
December 2025 Volunteer Highlights
