A returning community volunteer and a wonderful family from Virginia joined us today to mālama the ʻāina at Lokowaka.
We also had the privilege of learning about the revitalization of the Rappahannock Tribe’s language in Virginia—an inspiring reminder of the deep connections between culture, place, and stewardship.

It was a beautiful day, with low tide and just the right number of people to work in this particular area. It’s hard to believe six months have passed since we were last here. The progress we made today is truly impressive.
Mahalo nui to our regular volunteers and a wonderful family from California! We worked so well together, and we are deeply grateful for the shared effort and care for the ʻāina.
今日はとても良い天気に恵まれて、干潮時で、このエリアで作業するのにちょうど良い人数でした。前回ここで活動してから、もう6ヶ月も経ったとは信じられません。今日の作業でこのエリアはずいぶん前進しました。
いつも支えてくださるボランティアの皆さん、そしてカリフォルニアから来てくださった素敵なご家族に、心よりマハロ。皆で力を合わせて活動できたこと、そしてʻāinaへの想いを共有できたことに深く感謝しています。
April 12th
A group of very special ladies from Japan and a very special couple from California, all visiting Hilo for the Merrie Monarch Festival, returned to Lokowaka yesterday to give back to the ʻāina. 
They were joined by our regular community members and new volunteers. Together, we moved old piles of cut invasive trees to create more space for our waterbirds.
Their teamwork was truly impressive, and the day’s mission was beautifully accomplished.
We are deeply grateful for their positive energy and dedication to this work. Mahalo piha!
昨日、日本から来られたとても特別な女性の皆さんと、カリフォルニアから来られたとても特別なご夫婦が、メリーモナーク・フェスティバルのためにヒロを訪れた際、Lokowakaに再び戻って来て、ʻāina（大地）へ恩返しをしてくださいました。
そこに、いつも参加してくださる地元のメンバーや新しく加わった方々も合流しました。私たちは一緒に、切り倒して山積みにしていた外来種の木を移動させ、水鳥たちのための空間をつくりました。
皆さんのチームワークは本当に素晴らしく、その日のミッションは見事に達成されました。
ポジティブなエネルギーとともに力を尽くしてこの活動にご協力いただき、心から感謝いたします。マハロ・ピハ！
April 16th
Back in this area after about nine months.
We had to shift our focus elsewhere in the pond for initial clearing work, in honor of the commitment we made, so here it was just occasional weed whacking. But weed whacking doesn’t remove invasive California grass regrowth—it grows back fast, and the rhizomes keep spreading under rocks and boulders.
Back to square one… or maybe not.
The ongoing saga of Lokowaka wetland restoration continues.
We’re learning through trial and error. Some lessons come slowly, and some come again and again. This area will be sheet mulched and left in place for a long time—much longer than in earlier years. Stay tuned.
Yesterday was one of the first steps back in. University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Kuleana and Community students showed up and worked through high tide conditions to help remove overgrowth. Their effort made a real difference.

この場所に戻ってきたのは約9ヶ月ぶりになります。
私たちは最初に約束した通り、まずは他のエリアの初期整備を優先する必要があったため、ここでは時々草刈りをすることしかできませんでした。しかし、草刈りだけでは外来種のカリフォルニアグラスの再生を止めることはできません。成長はとても早く、さらに根茎（リゾーム）が岩や大きな石の下にまで広がっていきます。
まさに振り出しに戻るような気持ちになりますが、頑張ります。ロコワカ湿地再生の物語の一部です。
私たちは試行錯誤を重ねながら学んでいます。ゆっくりと積み重なる学びもあれば、何度も繰り返し向き合う学びもあります。このエリアは今後、シートマルチングを行い、これまでよりもずっと長い時間をかけてそのままの状態で管理していく予定です。どうぞ今後の変化を見守ってください。
そして昨日、その再スタートとなる最初の一歩がありました。ハワイ大学ヒロ校Kuleana and Communityの学生たちが、高潮の厳しい条件の中でも現場に入り、繁茂した草の一部を取り除く作業を手伝ってくれました。その力が確かな前進につながりました。

April 18th
We had twice the number of volunteers we expected today—including wonderful visitors from Arizona, Oregon, and Washington—and we are so grateful!
Taking advantage of the super low tide, we focused our efforts on the main island in the pond. With more hands, more materials, and continued learning through trial and error, we are feeling increasingly empowered in tackling the tough invasive California grass.

今日は、予想の2倍ものボランティアの皆さんが来てくださり、心から感謝しています。アリゾナ州やワシントン州から訪れてくださった方々もいて、本当にありがたい一日となりました。
干潮のタイミングを活かし、池の中のメインの島で作業を行いました。多くの人の手と資材、そして試行錯誤を重ねながらの学びによって、手強い外来種のカリフォルニアグラスに立ち向かう力が少しずつついてきていると感じています。

Volunteers spent part of today carefully collecting ʻaeʻae for replanting in another area before this site is covered with black plastic sheeting to help manage invasive growth.
今日の作業の一部は、別の場所へ移植するためのʻaeʻaeを丁寧に採取することでした。この場所はその後、外来種の繁茂を抑えるために黒いプラスチックシートで覆いました。
April 29th
It was a perfect morning—light rain on and off, cool air, and low tide—just right for continuing the work we began here on April 17th, with the help of a new volunteer. Another step forward.
今日は初めての参加者とともに、4月17日にここで始めた作業の続きを行い、もう一歩前進しました。小雨が降ったり止んだりの涼しい朝で、干潮でもあり、ちょうど良いコンディションでした。
