June 7th
It was a great day at Lokowaka with a few of our regular volunteers. We took the kayaks out to the islet, where last summer we restored the islet’s isolation within the pond by removing a massive amount of invasive California grass and recreating the open-water separation around it.
The last time we worked here was in January, when we removed some of the plastic covering used to suppress regrowth. Today, we found some California grass returning and learned that six months of covering was not long enough to eliminate all of it. We re-covered the affected area and outplanted some ʻahuʻawa in sections that were free of California grass. We also pruned the hau tree.
Although this islet is still undergoing restoration, nēnē, ʻalae keʻokeʻo, and ducks are already using it for resting and shelter.
今日はレギュラーのボランティア数名と一緒に、カヤックで池の中の小島へ向かいました。去年の夏までは、この一帯は外来種のカリフォルニアグラスに覆われていましたが、草を取り除いていくうちに、小島が姿を現しました。
この場所で前回作業したのは1月で、その際には草の再生を抑えるために敷いていた遮光シートの一部を取り外しました。ところが今日確認してみると、6か月間の被覆では十分でなかった部分があり、カリフォルニアグラスが再び生え始めていました。そのため、再びシートをかけました。カリフォルニアグラスが完全になくなった場所には、在来種のアフアヴァを植え付けました。また、ハウの木の剪定も行いました。
この小島はまだ再生の途中ですが、すでにネーネー、アラエ・ケオケオ、そしてカモたちが休息場所や寝ぐらとして利用しています。
June 14th
Yesterday, some of our regular volunteers were joined by Hawaiian Electric employees and their families, along with the wonderful family from California who returns each summer to volunteer with us. We made the most of the exceptionally low tide in the morning, removing California grass and cutting down shoebutton ardisia, making good progress toward restoring healthy wetland habitat. Mahalo nui loa to everyone who gave their time and energy to care for Lokowaka!
昨日はロコワカの常連ボランティアに加え、ハワイアン・エレクトリック(地元の電力会社)の社員の皆さんとご家族、そして毎年夏になると活動に参加してくださるカリフォルニアからの素敵なご家族も一緒に作業してくださいました。朝は特に潮が大きく引いていたので、カリフォルニアグラスの除去やシューボタンアルディシア(セイロンマンリョウ)の伐採を行い、健全な湿地環境の再生に向けて着実に前進することができました。

June 20th
What an amazing day it was at Lokowaka today! 
Thread Wallets a company based in Utah, brought a group of their recent giveaway winners—customers who had just graduated—to volunteer with us, along with their Marketing Director and Social Media Manager. We were also joined by visitors from New York and South Carolina, as well as many of our regular volunteers from the local community.
Together, we removed a significant amount of invasive California grass and invasive trees, making meaningful progress toward restoring healthy wetland habitat. Mahalo nui to everyone who worked both on land and in the water (though not everyone made it into the photos!).
A special mahalo to Cafe Pesto and Antics Pizza for generously providing delicious pizzas that everyone enjoyed after the workday. Mahalo also to The Seaside Restaurant Hilo for providing refreshing sodas served with lunch, and Waiakea for supplying water that kept volunteers hydrated throughout the morning.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed their time, energy, and aloha. Together, we continue the work of caring for and restoring this special place. 
今日は、ユタ州に拠点を置く Thread Wallets の、卒業したばかりの顧客を対象としたプレゼント企画の当選者たちが、マーケティングディレクターやソーシャルメディアマネージャーと一緒にボランティアに参加してくださいました。また、ニューヨーク州やサウスカロライナ州からの旅行者、そして地域の常連ボランティアの皆さんも加わり、とても充実した活動日となりました。
みんなで力を合わせて、カリフォルニアグラスや侵略的な樹木をたくさん除去し、湿地の再生に向けて大きく前進することができました。
そして、おいしいピザを提供してくださった Cafe Pesto と Antics、飲み物をご提供くださった The Seaside Restaurant と Waiākea にも心より感謝。
June 28th
Today our volunteers split into three teams, each working on a different restoration project at Lokowaka.
One team continued maintenance weeding along the roadside bank, another carried out maintenance weeding on the island, while the third team opened a new water channel to further isolate the island and improve habitat conditions.
Joining the effort were many of our regular community volunteers, along with a returning volunteer from Japan and her friend, who joined us for the first time.
Mahalo nui loa to everyone who spent their morning caring for this special place.

今日は、ボランティアの皆さんが3つのチームに分かれ、それぞれ異なる場所でロコワカの再生活動に取り組みました。
1つのチームは道路沿いの法面で除草作業を行い、もう1つのチームは島で維持管理のための除草を実施。そして3つ目のチームは、水の中に入ってカリフォルニアグラスを取り除き、新たな水路を開いて島を再び切り離すことができました。
今回も地域のいつものボランティアの皆さんに加え、日本から再び参加してくださったボランティアと、今回初めて参加してくださったご友人も一緒に汗を流してくださいました。
この特別な場所のために朝の時間をともに過ごしてくださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。心より感謝します。
