September began with a booth at the UH Hilo Community to Campus Resource Fair!

It was wonderful to see familiar faces and meet many new people. We enjoyed sharing the work of ʻĀina Hoʻōla Initiative with the UH Hilo community and other organizations.
We hope some of these new connections will grow into new volunteers, collaborators, and partnerships in the near future.
Mahalo to everyone who stopped by our booth and took the time to learn about our work!

Several of us spent the morning caring for Lokowaka today.

We worked on maintenance weeding, pruning, transporting previously cut branches, and outplanting native plants—all part of the ongoing care of this place.
Restoration progresses in stages. It isn’t only about clearing new areas. It also means returning again and again to care for areas we’ve already worked on, while gradually bringing native plants back to the landscape.
Mahalo nui to our dedicated regulars for another morning of mālama ʻāina and for your continued commitment to Lokowaka.

Students and a teacher from Nanao High School in Ishikawa, Japan, worked hard at Lokowaka this afternoon, in the rain and in the water.

The tide was exceptionally high, creating perfect conditions for removing vegetation where the roots and mud had loosened beneath the water. We can’t wait to see the transformation when the tide is low!
And after we left, a pair of nēnē, a pair of ʻalae keʻokeʻo, and ducks came to enjoy the area.
Last yearʻs group worked in a very muddy area. Photos and video were posted on September 10, 2025.
Mahalo nui loa for helping us mālama Lokowaka.

Mahalo nui to the group from University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s IS 150: Kuleana and Community class for working with us at Lokowaka Pond this afternoon!
With another exceptionally high tide, we took advantage of the conditions to continue the work that the Nanao High School group helped us with just four days ago. Together, we opened up more space for water.
Mahalo nui!

It was a beautiful day at Lokowaka—sunny, but not too hot, with low humidity and a nice breeze.
We were happy to welcome a few new volunteers today, and together, we got so much done!
We worked in two different areas, and the transformation in both is incredible. It’s always rewarding to look back at the end of our work and see what many hands working together can accomplish.
Mahalo nui to everyone who joined us today and helped mālama Lokowaka!

Today, our community volunteers—both new and seasoned—were joined by staff from the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources. Together, we removed a tremendous amount of California grass from the water. It was amazing to see how much we accomplished side by side!
We are also deeply grateful for DAR’s continued support and for the opportunity to participate in yesterday’s “Native, Non-Native, and Invasive Wetland Grasses Workshop,” hosted by DAR for wetland restoration practitioners and resource managers from across the state. It was a valuable chance to learn and connect—and then to work together at Lokowaka today.
Mahalo nui to everyone who joined us and helped mālama this special place!

And a special mahalo to Cafe Pesto Hilo Bay and Antics Pizza for the delicious pizzas, and to Express Waiters for delivering them to us!
After a morning of hard work, they were very much appreciated!
