K–11 students from Kanu o ka ‘Āina – New Century Public Charter School came to care for Lokowaka today. With many hands working together, the work moved quickly and joyfully.
カヌ・オ・カ・アーイナ・ニューセンチュリー・パブリック・チャータースクールの幼稚園生から11年生までの生徒たちが、今日ロコワカの作業を手伝ってくれました。みんなが力を合わせて頑張ってくれたおかげで、作業がずいぶんはかどりました。
May 2nd
Mahalo nui to the volunteers who showed up in the rain this morning. We are so grateful for their dedication. Once we got started, the rain softened, coming and going.
We returned to the area where we removed large amounts of California grass two months ago, and worked to clear the regrowth that had sprouted again from roots and stems left in the mud. The ʻahuʻawa (native sedge) we outplanted two months ago are doing well, and we planted more today. In another area, we removed large amounts of California grass growing in the water.
Step by step, the work moves forward. It was a steady and productive morning.
今朝は雨の中にもかかわらず参加してくださったボランティアの皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。作業を始めると、雨はやわらぎ、降ったり止んだりしていました。
2か月前に大量のカリフォルニアグラスを刈り取った場所に戻り、泥の中に残っていた根や茎から再び伸びてきたカリフォルニアグラスの除去を行いました。2か月前に植え付けたʻahuʻawa（在来のカヤツリグサ科植物）も順調に育っていて、今回さらに植え付けを行いました。別の場所では、池の中に広がっていたカリフォルニアグラスをたくさん取り除きました。
一歩一歩、着実に前へ進んでいます。
May 4th
Today, 2nd and 5th graders from Kua o ka Lā New Century Public Charter School shared a mele they composed for Lokowaka Pond. It was a heartfelt makana to this cherished place, reflecting their deepening connection to ʻāina.
After presenting their mele, the 2nd graders of Kua O Ka New Century Public Charter School helped with maintenance weeding and gifted us naupaka kahakai they had grown from seed. They are wonderful stewards of our ʻāina, caring for it with intention and aloha.
今日は、Kua o ka Lā New Century Public Charter Schoolの2年生と5年生が、ロコワカ・ポンドのために自分たちで作ったメレ（歌）を披露してくれました。それは、この大切な場所への心のこもったマカナ（贈り物）で、彼らのʻāina（土地）とのつながりが深まっていることを実感しました。
前回の投稿でご紹介したメレを披露してくれた後、Kua o ka Lā New Century Public Charter Schoolの2年生たちは、メンテナンスの草取りを手伝ってくれました。そして、ロコワカのために種から育てたナウパカ・カハカイをプレゼントしてくれました。意図とアロハの心をもってʻāina（自然・土地）を大切にする、素晴らしい子どもたちです。
May 6th
Steady progress each time. We appreciate our volunteers so much. Moving a big pile of California grass previously removed from the pond. It’s dense and heavy. These strong guys make it look easy, but it’s hard work.
少しずつ、着実に前へ。ボランティアの皆さんに心から感謝しています。池から以前取り除いたカリフォルニアグラスの大きな山を運んでいる様子です。とても密集していて重たく、見た目以上に大変な作業です。力のある人かやっていると簡単そうに見えますが、実際はとてもハードワークです。
May 9th
We took advantage of today’s low tide to remove fallen California grass that had been covering the corridor we created for waterbirds. It had been 4.5 months since the last clearing—and the interval before that was also 4.5 months. This time, for the first time, we also scooped out some of the accumulated mud.
Mahalo nui to the volunteers who worked hard under the hot sun.
干潮のタイミングを活かして、水鳥たちが通れるようにカリフォルニアグラスを取り除いている通路に、周囲の草がまた倒れかかってきていたため、その撤去作業を行いました。今回も含め、過去2回の作業はいずれも4.5か月おき。今回はこれまでとは違い、堆積していた泥も一部すくい出しました。
暑い日差しの下で力を尽くしてくださったボランティアの皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。
May 10th
All nauaka grown by students of Kua O Ka Lā New Century Public Charter School were outplanted, while maintenance weeding along the roadside bank continued. Reopening of the waterbird corridor also carried over from yesterday’s work.
Only one person at each site, but great progress was made i kēia Lā Mākuahine (on this Mother’s Day).
今日は、道路沿いの土手の除草作業の続きや、Kua o ka Lā New Century Public Charter Schoolの生徒たちが育ててくれたナウアカの植え付け、そして昨日やり始めた水鳥のための通り道の作業も引き続き行いました。
それぞれの現場は1人ずつでの作業でしたが、この母の日（Lā Makuahine）に、しっかりとした前進が見られました。
May 13th
Three areas were cared for today: weeding along the bank by the road, removal of California grass growing in the water, and scooping out mud from the corridor along with additional California grass removal there as well. We all worked in our designated areas and accomplished a great deal. I mua! Forward!
今日は3か所での作業がありました。道路沿いの土手の草取り、水中に生えているカリフォルニアグラスの除去、そして水鳥たちの通り道として広げたところの泥の掻き出しとカリフォルニアグラス除去を行いました。それぞれ担当エリアで、作業を進めました。I mua! （前進！）
May 30th
It had been about 2½ weeks since our last volunteer day at Lokowaka, and it felt so good to gather again with many helping hands. Lokowaka’s regulars were joined by a returning visitor from Washington and new faces from our local community, California, and Japan. We were also delighted to welcome nā kiaʻi loko from Loko Iʻa Pāʻaiau, an approximately 400-year-old royal Hawaiian fishpond in the Kalauao ahupuaʻa of ʻEwa on Oʻahu. Mahalo to everyone who spent part of their day caring for this special place.
前回のボランティアデーから約2週間半が経ちましたが、今日はたくさんの皆さんと一緒に活動できて本当にうれしかったです。ロコワカの常連ボランティアに加え、ワシントン州からのリピーターの方、そして地域の皆さん、カリフォルニア、日本からの新しい参加者も加わりました。
また、オアフ島エヴァ地区のカラウアオ・アフプアアにある、パーアイアウ（Pāʻaiau）と呼ばれる約400年の歴史を持つ王族のロコイア（養魚池）の管理・保全に携わっているご夫婦も参加してくださいました。
皆さん、お疲れさまでした。そして本当にありがとうございました。
