August 1st
We were happy to welcome a new volunteer to Lokowaka today! 
Together, we accomplished a great deal of maintenance weeding while tree trimming and weed whacking were underway nearby.
Our new volunteer also kindly brought some delicious white pineapple to share with everyone. It was incredibly sweet and the perfect treat after a morning of hard work. Mahalo nui for your thoughtfulness!
We also enjoyed some special wildlife sightings. An ʻio (Hawaiian hawk) stopped by to check us out, and an ʻūlili (wandering tattler) was also spotted at Lokowaka.
It was a productive day, and we’re grateful for everyone who helps mālama ʻāina with us. Mahalo nui!
今日はLokowakaに新しいボランティアの方をお迎えしました！
みんなで維持管理のための草取りを進める一方、すぐ近くでは木の枝の剪定なども行われ、とても充実した作業日となりました。
新しく参加してくださったボランティアの方が、とても甘いホワイトパイナップルを持ってきてくださり、作業前と後にぴったりのごちそうでした。温かいお気持ちを本当にありがとうございました！
作業の合間には、私たちの様子を見に来たかのようなʻio（ハワイノスリ）の姿や、ʻūlili（メリケンキアシシギ）を見ることもできました。
とても充実した一日となりましたしMahalo nui!
August 8th
Today was Day 2 of maintenance on the waterbird corridor at Kiʻonakapahu Pond.
In just three months, the corridor had become overgrown with California grass again. But each time we return to clear it, the work gets a little easier, and the corridor gets a little wider.
Eventually, it won’t be a corridor anymore—it will be part of the open pond again. This entire area is part of Kiʻonakapahu Pond, and little by little, we are reclaiming it from the invasive grass.
Our resident waterbirds regularly use this corridor, and last year, koloa mōhā (Northern Pintails) especially loved spending time here. 
It takes repeated care and patience, but each round of maintenance brings us a little closer to restoring the pond.

今日は、キオナカパフ池の水鳥のための水路のメンテナンス2日目でした。
わずか3か月で、またカリフォルニアグラスが生い茂ってしまいました。でも、繰り返し除去しているうちに、草を取り除く作業は少しずつ楽になり、水路も作業をするたびに少しずつ広がっています。
いつか、ここはもう「水路」ではなく、再び開けた池の一部になることを目指しています。この場所全体がもともとキオナカパフ池の一部。少しずつ、外来のカリフォルニアグラスに覆われた場所を、本来の池の姿へと戻しています。
普段からロコワカに暮らす水鳥たちもこの水路をよく利用しています。そして昨年は、コロア・モーハ（オナガガモ）たちが特にこの場所を気に入って、よく利用していました。
繰り返し手を入れ、根気よく続けていく必要がありますが、メンテナンスを重ねるたびに、少しずつ池の再生に近づいています。
今日一緒に作業してくださった地元のボランティアの方々、そしてカリフォルニアと日本から参加してくださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました！
August 21st
We are so grateful to the students and teachers from Takigawa Junior and Senior High School in Kobe, Japan, who worked hard today removing California grass to widen the waterbird channel in the Kiʻonakapahu unit of Lokowaka.
Mahalo nui to Waiakea for keeping us hydrated while we worked hard under the hot sun today! 
神戸市の滝川中学校・滝川高等学校の生徒の皆さんと先生方が、今日ロコワカのキオナカパフ（Kiʻonakapahu）エリアで、野鳥たちが利用する水路を広げるために、外来種のカリフォルニアグラスを一生懸命取り除いてくださいました。皆さんのご協力に心から感謝しています。
暑い日差しの中での作業中、私たちの水分補給を支えてくださったWaiākeaに心から感謝します！
August 29th
What a great day at Lokowaka—in the rain and in the sun!
We were grateful to spend the day mālama ʻāina alongside our regular community volunteers and visitors, including many educators and students. We were also happy to welcome students and their professor from Ryukoku University in Japan.
People from near and far—those born and raised in Hawaiʻi, those who now call Hawaiʻi home, and visitors from beyond our islands—all came together with a shared purpose: caring for Lokowaka.
Mahalo nui loa to everyone who joined us and put their hands to work today!
And a special mahalo to Cafe Pesto Hilo Bay and Antics Pizza for providing us with delicious pizzas! They were especially appreciated after a day of hard work.
We were so busy enjoying the food and each other’s company that we forgot to take photos at the end!
今日は、雨にも降られ、太陽にも照らされながら、いつも参加してくださる地元のボランティア方たちと、日本からの参加者も一緒に、一所懸命頑張りました。今回は教育関係者や学生の参加や学生が多く、日本からは去年に引き続き、龍谷大学の学生の皆さんと先生も参加してくださいました。
ハワイで生まれ育った人、ハワイを新たな故郷として暮らしている人、そして遠くから訪れた人たち。さまざまな場所から集まった皆さんが、「ロコワカを大切にする」という共通の思いのもと、一緒に力を合わせました。
一緒に汗を流してくださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました！
そして、おいしいピザを提供してくださったCafe PestoとAnticsにも、心から感謝！作業した後のピザは、格別でした。
おいしいピザと皆さんとの楽しい時間に夢中になって、最後に写真を撮るのをすっかり忘れてしまいました！
