March 7th
Today we had volunteers from our local community, Oʻahu, and even Germany.
It turned out to be the perfect day to use our new raft for the first time. To use the raft, we need a small group—no more than about 10 people—and the tide cannot be too low. Today everything lined up perfectly. Patrick finished building the raft in early December 2025, and it was wonderful to finally put it to use.
We all rode the raft together to reach the small island in the pond. Some volunteers planted ʻaeʻae there, while others worked in an area we last worked on nearly a year ago.
Seeing people from near and far come together to care for this place is always inspiring. Mahalo nui loa to everyone who joined us today!

今日は、地元のコミュニティの方々に加えて、オアフ島やドイツからのボランティアも参加してくださいました。
今日は新しいいかだを初めて使うのにぴったりの日となりました。いかだを使うには、少人数（約10人）であること、そして潮が引きすぎていないことが条件です。今日はその条件がすべてそろいました。このいかだは、2025年12月初めにパトリックが完成させたもので、ようやく使うことができてとても嬉しかったです。
私たちはみんなでいかだに乗り、池の中の小さな島へ向かいました。そこでʻaeʻaeを植えたグループもいれば、約1年前に作業したエリアで作業を行ったグループもいました。
近くからも遠くからも人々が集まり、この場所を大切にしてくれることにいつも大きな励ましをもらっています。今日参加してくださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。

We were so grateful to welcome students from Bowdoin College (Maine) who chose to spend part of their spring break volunteering with us at Lokowaka Pond.
This inspiring group came from around the world — Burundi, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea — and from U.S. states including Colorado, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Washington.
Their teamwork was amazing as they got their hands and feet muddy helping restore this culturally and ecologically significant place — they brought their energy, curiosity, and heart to the work. Mahalo nui!
Our efforts protect biodiversity by restoring the coastal wetlands and estuaries.
メイン州のBowdoin Collegeの学生の学生さんたちが、春休みの一部を使ってロコワカ・ポンドで心を込めて作業に取り組んでくれました。とてもありがたいです。
ブルンジ、香港、インド、ケニア、モンゴル、サウジアラビア、韓国、そしてアメリカのコロラド州、カンザス州、メイン州、マサチューセッツ州、ニューヨーク州、ワシントン州出身の学生さんたちで、とても国際的。
泥んこになって、この特別な場所の再生を手伝ってくれて、チームワークも抜群。明るエネルギッシュで、好奇心に満ちたメンバーでした。
私たちの取り組みは、文化的にも経済的にも重要なこの場所の沿岸湿地や河口域を再生することで、生物多様性を守ることにつながっています。

We are grateful for the beautiful weather and for everyone who came to volunteer with us today. With many of our regulars and some first-time volunteers, we worked side by side in areas that are more accessible during low tide.
今日は良い天気に恵まれて、常連のメンバーに加え、今回初めてご参加くださった方々とともに、干潮時に作業しやすいエリアで協力して活動を行いました。ありがとうございました！

Mahalo piha to Mitsuru “Max” Maemori Sensei and Kumu Jade Rivera of Hilo Intermediate School for inviting Kumiko to introduce their haumāna to the Lokowaka restoration project—his students in Teen Health and Explore Wheel classes, and her students in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) classes on March 23 and 24. Both teachers have volunteered with us at Lokowaka, and we are so fortunate for their continued support!
3月23日と24日に、ヒロ・インターミディエイト・スクールのミツル（マックス）・マエモリ先生とジェイド・リベラ先生が、生徒の皆さんにロコワカでの活動についてお話しする機会をクミコに与えてくださいました。心より感謝いたします。マエモリ先生は、ティーンヘルスおよびエクスプロア・ホイールのクラスで、リベラ先生は、AVID（大学進学準備プログラム）のクラスでお話しさせていただきました。お二人の先生はこれまでロコワカでボランティアにも参加してくださっており、その継続的なご支援に深く感謝しています。

Stanford University’s Mālama Hawaiʻi Alternative Spring Break Program brought an incredible group of enthusiastic and hardworking participants to Lokowaka today. Working both on land and in the water, they made a truly meaningful impact. Mahalo nui loa for your kōkua and for helping to mālama this special place. It was especially meaningful to have three participants who grew up in Hawaiʻi—Līhuʻe, Honolulu, and Hilo—return to give back to the ʻāina.
今日はスタンフォード大学のマーラマ・ハワイ・オルタナティブ・スプリングブレイク・プログラムの協力（コークア）精神に満ちたエネルギッシュな学生さんたちがロコワカに来てくれました。陸でも水の中でも熱心に作業してくれて、本当にありがたかったです。参加者のうち3名は、リフエ、ホノルル、そしてヒロの出身で、ハワイで育った子たちでした！

Shout out to these amazing volunteers today for their hard work caring for Lokowaka!
We were so grateful to have two wonderful visitors from California join our team—they jumped right in and made a real difference. Even with a smaller group, so much was accomplished: weeding along the roadside bank, outplanting ʻaeʻae, removing invasive grass, and moving a huge pile of grass.
Mahalo nui loa for your positive energy and care for this place. 
今日、ロコワカのために一生懸命活動してくれた素晴らしいボランティアの皆さんに心から感謝します
カリフォルニアから来てくれたお二人もチームに加わり、すぐに作業に溶け込んで大きな力になってくれました。少人数ではありましたが、道路沿いの土手の除草、ʻaeʻaeの植え付け、外来草の除去、そして大きな草の山の移動など、多くの作業を進めることができました。
この場所への思いやりと前向きなエネルギーに、心からマハロを送ります

Mahalo piha to the 5th and 6th graders of Kua O Ka La for bringing such enthusiastic energy to Lokowaka today!
We are so grateful for this amazing group—their strong hands and positive spirit made a real difference. They focused on an area that needed attention, clearing regrowing invasive grass, and then opened up a new section we’ve been waiting to work on for some time.
The 6th graders had worked in a different section when they were in 4th grade—it was so wonderful to welcome them back!
今日は、Kua o ka Lā New Century Public Charter Schoolのエネルギッシュな5年生と6年生がロコワカに来てくれました。マハロ！
また生えてきたやっかいなカリフォルニアグラスを取り除いてくれただけでなく、新たなエリアにも取り組んでくれました。その場所はもう何ヶ月もやりたいと思っていたころなので、とてもありがたかったです。
6年生の子たちは、4年生のときに別のエリアで作業してくれたのですが、こうしてまた戻ってきてくれたことをとても嬉しく思います。
