July 1st
Thanks to the hard work of the Kupu HYCC Summer Program members and our volunteers, we made tremendous progress on the backside of the island today. A massive area of California grass rooted in the water—some of it quite deep during high tide, with tall stalks rising well above the surface—has now been reduced to just two small sections. “Small” only in comparison to what it once was! Even those remaining patches require a great deal of time and effort to remove.
At the end of the day, we returned to the roadside area to cover the final pile of removed grass, wrapping up another productive day of restoration.
Kupu HYCCサマープログラムのメンバーとボランティアの皆さんの尽力により、今日は島の裏側で大きな進展がありました。水に根を張った大量のカリフォルニアグラス──満潮時にはかなり深い水の中にありながらも、背の高い茎が水面のはるか上まで伸びている──が、今ではたった二か所の小さなエリアにまで減りました。「小さい」といっても、以前の広がりと比べてのことです。残っている部分でさえ、取り除くには多くの時間と労力が必要です。
作業の終わりには、道路沿いのエリアに戻って、抜き取った草の最後の山をシートで覆って、今日の作業を締めくくりました。
July 5th
What an amazing morning we had with the Kupu HYCC Summer Program members and a visitor from California! Together, we watched the last iceberg-like patch of California grass disappear — the transformation is incredible.
In the afternoon, with the continued help of the HYCC members, we tackled another area and removed most of the remaining patch.
What a day of progress!
Kupu HYCCサマープログラムのメンバーたち、そしてカリフォルニアからの旅行者と一緒に作業を行なった素晴らしい朝でした！氷山のように残っていたカリフォルニアグラスの最後の一角がスッキリなくなりました！驚くべき変化です！
午後は、Kupuのメンバーたちの協力で、もう一つのエリアに取り組みました。そこはほぼ完成です。
すごい進展の一日でした！
July 12th
Many of our regular volunteers and a Kupu HYCC Summer Program member were joined by visitors from Japan and California, as well as one of our longtime volunteers who had moved away but returned for a visit from Pennsylvania. We also welcomed some new volunteers to the team. Our volunteers are truly silver and gold to us!
Together, we removed a significant amount of invasive grass and trees, opening up the area beautifully. We are so grateful for everyone’s hard work!
What an amazing day it was!
Mahalo nui to Cafe Pesto Hilo Bay for donating delicious pizzas, and to the volunteer who kindly delivered them to us. A big mahalo also to Waiakea for providing the refreshing water!
今日は、常連のボランティアのメンバーたちと、Kupu HYCCサマープログラムのメンバーに加え、日本やカリフォルニアからの旅行者、そしてペンシルベニアから一時帰省中の、元常連ボランティアが参加してくれました。さらに、新しい参加者も数名加わり、みんなで外来種の草や木を大量に取り除き、景観が見違えるほど開けました。皆さんの一生懸命な働きに、心から感謝しています！
本当に素晴らしいボランティアデイでした！ボランティアの皆さんは、私たちにとって本当に「銀と金」のような大切な存在です！
美味しいピザをご提供くださったカフェ・ペスト、そして配達してくださったボランティアの方、そしてお水を提供してくださったワイアケアにも心から感謝。
July 19th
Thanks to the help of new volunteers and a Kupu HYCC Summer Program member, we were able to consolidate several piles of cut trees into one large heap this morning. We also continued removing invasive California grass, further opening up the area we began clearing six days ago.
Three of the new volunteers were employees of ʻOhana Health Plan. It’s wonderful to see ʻOhana Health Plan team members actively and regularly volunteering in the community—supporting local organizations and addressing community needs.
新しく参加してくださったボランティアの皆さんと、Kupu HYCCサマープログラムのメンバーの協力のおかげで、今朝は複数の伐採した木の山を一つにまとめることができました。その後、6日前にカリフォルニアグラスを除去して広げたエリアをさらに広げることごできました。
新しいボランティアのうち3名は、ʻOhana Health Planの職員の方々でした。ʻOhana Health Planのチームメンバーは、地元社会で積極的かつ継続的にボランティア活動に参加し、地域の非営利団体を支援して地域のニーズに応えているそうです。
July 20th
We started the day with a bit of maintenance weeding alongside our Kupu HYCC member. Once the volunteers arrived, we returned to the same areas as yesterday to continue clearing. At high tide, it’s incredible to see how freely the water now flows into this section of Kiʻonakapahu Pond. It’s truly coming back to life.
今朝は、Kupu HYCCメンバーと一緒に軽いメンテナンスの草取りからスタートしました。ボランティアたちが到着してからは、昨日と同じエリアに戻り、引き続き木を切ったり、草を刈ったり抜いたりして、湿地再生作業を進めました。満潮時には、水がキオナカパフ池のこのセクションに流れ込みやすくなった様子がはっきりと見え、池が生き返りつつあるのを実感できます。
July 25th
Today marks the beginning of a new Hawaiian lunar month.
It started with a stunning double rainbow, and we were greeted by many nēnē in the area we’ve restored to their liking. We also shared the space with ʻalae keʻokeʻo, ʻaukuʻu, ducks, and even an osprey—each presence a reminder of the life returning to this wetland as it heals.
In the morning, our Kupu member helped us cover the final section of a large mound of removed California grass.
When the volunteers arrived, we shifted to another area undergoing a dramatic transformation. On sunny days like today, the heat in this spot can become intense—the tall California grass blocks the wind, while the dense growth of invasive trees traps the warmth, making the air stifling. Still, we pressed on, removing more grass and trees. And as the trees come down, the mosquitoes seem to vanish too.
今日は新しいハワイの陰暦月の始まりです。美しいダブルレインボーとともに始まり、私たちがこの夏に草を取り除いたエリアで、たくさんのネーネーたちが出迎えてくれました。アラエケオケオ、アウクウ、カモたち、そしてミサゴも私たちとも過ごすことができました。再生しつつあるこの湿地に命が戻ってきていることを改めて感じさせてくれました。
朝は、Kupuプログラムのメンバーが、大量に取り除いたカリフォルニアグラスの山の最後の部分を覆う作業を手伝ってくれました。
ボランティアの皆さんが到着すると、私たちは別のエリアへと移動しました。そこも大きな変化の途中にあります。今日のように晴れた日には、この場所は特に暑くなります。背の高いカリフォルニアグラスが風を遮り、侵入種の木々の密集が熱を閉じ込めるため、とても暑くなります。それでも私たちは作業を続け、さらに草や木を取り除きました。木を取り除くと、蚊も少なくなります。
今日のボランティアは、常連の方々、久しぶりの方、そして日本やウェールズからの旅行者も参加してくれました。とてもありがたいです。
July 27th
Another great day of progress at Lokowaka!
With the help of our dedicated Kupu member, we started the morning by covering a massive pile of removed California grass. Once volunteers arrived, we returned to the same area as yesterday and continued cutting invasive grasses and clearing trees.
We were excited to welcome back returning volunteers and greet new faces—including visitors all the way from Japan!
After the volunteers left in the afternoon, we kept the momentum going and removed even more grass.
The area has transformed—it looks so different now!
ロコワカでの作業、今日も素晴らしい進展がありました！
朝一番に、Kupuメンバーと一緒に、大量に除去したカリフォルニアグラスの山の大部分にシートを被せました。その後、ボランティアの皆さんが到着し、昨日と同じエリアで作業を続け、草や木をさらに取り除きました。
リピーターのボランティアの皆さんと、そして日本からの旅行者者を含む新しいボランティアの皆さんをお迎えできて、とても嬉しかったです！
ボランティアの皆さんが帰られた後、午後には、引き続き多くの草を除去しました。
どこにいるのかわからないほど、このエリアは大変身しました！
July 28th
On this special World Nature Conservation Day, which also aligned with the Hawaiian lunar day of Kūlua—known for its dynamic and active energy—we were uplifted by a full day of connection and conservation.
The morning began with our dedicated KUPU member, followed by a high school teacher visiting from Japan who came to learn about our work and joined us in the field. Later, a regular volunteer—a mother with her two young children—arrived, followed by members of the Waiākea High School Robotics Team and their friends.
The Japanese teacher shared his hopes of bringing his students to join us next year. The Robotics team members brainstormed creative ways they could further support our efforts. And one of our youngest volunteers was inspired to write about his experience and conservation work.
It was truly a day guided by the spirit of conservation and lifted by the active, forward-moving energy of Kūlua.
今日は、世界自然保全の日、そして活動的なエネルギーに満ちたハワイの旧暦「 Kūlua（クールア）」の日でもあり、自然とのつながりと保全の一日となりました。
朝は、私たちの頼もしいKupuメンバーとともに始まりました。その後、日本から来られた高校の先生が現地の活動を学びに訪れ、一緒に作業にも参加してくださいました。しばらくして、いつも参加してくれているボランティアのお母さんと二人の小さなお子さんが到着し、さらに、Waiākea高校ロボティクスチームのメンバーとそのお友だちも加わってくれました。
日本の先生は、来年は生徒たちを連れてきたいと希望を語ってくださいました。ロボティクスチームのメンバーは、これから自分たちにできる支援について創造的にアイディアを出し合っていました。そして、最年少のボランティアのひとりは、自分の保全活動について書いてみたいと話してくれました。
まさに自然保全の精神に導かれ、クールアの前向きなエネルギーに後押しされた一日でした。
