It is the month named Makaliʻi now. (Makali’i i

It is the month named Makaliʻi now. (Makali’i is also the name for the Pleiades.) Makali’i marks the beginning of a Hawaiian new year.

‘Olelo no’eau (Hawaiian proverb):

“Makali’i ka malama, makali’i nā maka, makali’i nā nahele.”
Makali’ is the month in which people squint and plants grow stunted. (Aplay on diffrent meanings of makaliʻi.)

“O Makaliʻi ke kāne, o Hiʻipoi ka wahine, hānau ke keiki he maikaʻi.” Makaliʻi is the husband, Hiʻipoi (Cherished-one) the wife; a child born to them is well behaved. (Said of a child born in the month of Makaliʻi.)

今月の名前はマカリイ。プレイアデス星団のこともマカリイと呼びます。マカリイは新年の始まり。

オーレロ・ノエアウ（ハワイのことわざ）では、

マカリイは人々が目を細め、植物の成長が阻害される月。(色んな意味を持つマカリリの言葉のあそび)

マカリイが夫、ヒイポイ（大切な人）が妻。この2人から生まれた子供は行儀が良い。（マカリイという月に生まれた子供のこと）

The tides chart and moon rise and set times are in HST for Pearl Harbor. Midnight is the dividing point between two consecutive days. Some of this calendarʻs illustrated moon shapes are not accurate, but this monthly calendar with the name of the month is very useful for what we do because we can see the tides and anahulu (10-day periods).

Lokowaka Pond complex is No. 11 in State of Hawaiʻi and No. 1 on Hawaiʻi Island on their priority list. @dlnrdar staff from East Hawai’i were a huge help in removing California grass in the water today. A group of strong men joined Patrick for this hard work. It is not an easy task and Patrick rarely ever gets so much help. We canʻt thank them enough. And regulars received many large loads of removed grass from them and made an enormous pile on land. Today’s work was harder than usual even on land. Thank you, Jared and Ichi! This is purely a labor of love. A very nice lady @tita_fon_ stopped by after we finished, gave us praise, and gave Kumiko a pretty flower for her hair. Thank you everyone for a great day!

ハワイ州土地天然資源局、水産資源部の力持ちスタッフが、今日、池の中に生い茂ったカリフォルニアグラスを引き抜く作業を手伝ってくれました。この水の中での作業はとても大変で、いつもパトリックがやってくれているのですが、一度に数名が手伝ってくれるのは、今回初めてのことで、本当にありがたかったです。彼らがガッツリと引っ張り取った大量の草(長くて硬くて重い)を陸まで運び、そこでレギラーメンバーが受け取って、山積みにしました。これもいつもよりも力がいる大変な作業でした。なにしろ重いのです。ジャレッドとイチさん、本当にありがとう！奉仕の精神に心から感謝！作業を終えた後の片付け中に、近くのビーチに向かう途中の地元の女性が立ち寄ってくれて、私たちのプロジェクトの成果を褒めてくれ、素敵な髪に飾る花を久美子にプレゼントしてくれました。とても良い１日でした。とてもありがたいです。

Many volunteers, new and well-seasoned. We worked as a team today. The amount of work we got done was very impressive. It was as though we had rehearsed for this. Everyone took a role and just jumped right into it!

We are so thankful that we were chosen as one of the nine organizations to participate in the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authorityʻs Community Stewardship Program. This 3-month transformative cohort program aimed at fostering regenerative tourism and preserving Hawaiʻi’s cultural and natural resources not only gave us funding to support our efforts but capacity-building opportunities such as specialized workshops, professional services, and tailored consultations designed to enhance our stewardship activities. We were connected with many people and organizations that help us grow. This is priceless!

Kanoe Takitani-Puahi, Director of Strategic Communications, and Brandon Fairchild, Program Coordinator are absolutely amazing people! They are leading us through this program with so much aloha. Their support and guidance are incredible.

They came to see what we do at Lokowaka in September when the program started, and today they came with ʻŌiwi TV crew.

It was a great day for Lokowaka. We were blessed with rain and a rainbow before the shoot, then blessed again with rain after the shoot.

ハワイ・ツーリズム・オーソリティのコミュニティ・スチュワードシップ・プログラムに参加する9つの組織のうちの1つとして私たちが選ばれたことにとても感謝しています。再生型観光の促進と、ハワイの文化的および天然資源の保護を目的としたこの 3 か月の革新的なコホートプログラムは、私たちの取り組みをサポートする資金を提供してくれるだけでなく、私たちの管理活動を強化するために役立つ専門的なワークショップやサービス、個別のコンサルティングなど、色んな機会も提供してれています。私たちの成長を助けてくれる多くの人々や組織と繋がりができました。これは貴重なことです！

We are so thankful that we can get to do the restoration work at Lokowaka with the collaboration of so many. The land can breathe better, water can flow more freely, endangered and threatened birds and their companions have more space, cultural and historical treasures are reappearing. Positive changes are taking place. Thank you to all the individuals, businesses, schools, and organizations that donated generous gifts of time, money, and items we need. Thank you also to people that have given us encouragement, ideas, suggestions, and advice. ‘A ‘ohe hana nui ke alu ‘ia – No task is too big when done together by all.
