May 2025 Volunteer Day Highlights

We’re so grateful for the volunteers who helped us outplant ahuʻawa on the island at Lokowaka Pond today—these plants were lovingly grown by the kindergarteners of Kua o Ka Lā. ʻAeʻae were also planted in the area. It was a tremendous help to have volunteers remove previously cut trees in preparation for this summer’s restoration work. Mahalo nui!

今日はロコワカ池の島でahuʻawa (アフヴァ)を植えるをボランティアの若者に手伝ってもらいました。クア・オ・カ・ラーという地元の学校の幼稚園児たちが大切に育ててくれたものです。ʻaeʻae（アエアエ）も植えました。そして、以前伐採したまま放置していた木々を移動させるのものボランティアの2人がやってくれて、とても助かりました。この夏そこでの作業がしやすくなりました。本当にありがとうございました！

These 2 awesome volunteers have each worked with us several times before, but this was their first time teaming up—and their first time tackling this kind of task. They formed a team on the spot and creatively used two kayaks to transport cut trees.

今回参加してくれたボランティアの2人は、それぞれ過去に何度も活動に参加してくれていますが、一緒に作業するのは初めて、そしてこの作業をするのも初めてでした。意気投合して、即興でアイデアを出し合って、上手く2つのカヤックを使って伐採した木を運んでくれました。素晴らしい！

Another beautiful and productive day! We covered three large piles of removed grass with black sheetings and cleared a new area, extending toward the section where we’ve been cutting trees to create an open field.

今日も素晴らしく充実した一日でした！取り除いた草の大きな山を3つ黒いシートで覆い、その後、新たなエリアの草を刈り取りました。このエリアは、木を伐採して開けたフィールドを作っている場所へと続いています。

The transformation in this area is truly remarkable. When we first started, it was completely inaccessible—a dense jungle of California grass. But we gradually cleared it, section by section, until it became what you see now. This incredible change was made possible by the unwavering dedication of our volunteers.

Some joined us for just a day, some come occasionally, and some have been with us almost every month. It was this collective effort—each person contributing their time and energy—that made this transformation possible.

And not to mention the generous contributions we received, which have been essential in keeping this project sustainable.

このエリアの変貌は本当に素晴らしいです。最初は一面がカリフォルニアグラスのジャングルで、まったく立ち入ることができませんでした。でも、私たちは少しずつ草を取り除き、ここまでの変化を実現しました。それは、献身的なボランティアの皆さんのおかげです。

1日だけ参加してくれた方もいれば、時々来てくれる方も、ほぼ毎月欠かさず来てくれる方もいます。こうした人々が力を合わせてくれたからこそ、この素晴らしい変貌が可能になりました。

さらに、このプロジェクトを持続可能に保つためにいただいた多くのご支援のおかげです。

Thirteen nēnē (Hawaiian geese) were with us throughout our work at Kiʻonakapahu Pond today. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them foraging in the areas where we’ve been steadily removing California grass, section by section. We look forward to watching them explore the space we cleared today. We are so grateful for the hard work of six visitors from Canada and local college students who contributed to that effort today.

今日は作業中ずっと、13羽のネーネー（ハワイガン）がキオナカパフ池で私たちの近くにいました。これまで段階を追ってカリフォルニアグラスを取り除いてきた場所で、彼らが採餌している姿を見るのは本当に嬉しいことです。今日新たに開けた場所を、これから彼らが利用してくれるのを楽しみにしています。今日の作業に貢献してくれた、カナダからの6人の訪問者と地元の大学生たちの努力に心から感謝しています。

Thank you, nēnē, for appreciating what we’re doing. Your presence is a true encouragement. It’s not an easy task, but it’s absolutely worth it. We will keep going, just as we promised you five years ago when you guys first started coming here.

ネーネーたち、私たちの活動を気に入ってくれてありがとう。こうやって，あなたたちの姿を見ると本当に励みになるよ。簡単な作業ではないけど、本当にやりがいがあるよ。５年前に来てくれるようになったときに、あなたたちのためにやり続けるよって約束したよね。これからも頑張るからね。

In the morning, we continued fine-tuning our work in the same area as yesterday. In the afternoon, we shifted to a different area for maintenance tasks. We only had one volunteer today, but his help made a big difference, and he worked longer hours.

午前中は昨日と同じエリアで作業の仕上げを行い、午後は別のエリアでメンテナンス作業を行いました。今日はボランティアが1人だけでしたが、長時間手伝ってくれてとても助かりました

Today’s workday began with a warm welcome from two nēnē. We focused on clearing a section that becomes part of the pond at high tide. Regular volunteers and visitors from Oregon with ties to Hawaiʻi worked together, set a goal for the day, and accomplished it.

今日の作業日は、2羽のネネに出迎えられるところから始まりました。満潮時に池の一部となるエリアで草刈りを行いました。常連のボランティアと、ハワイにゆかりのあるオレゴンからの旅行者が協力し、目標を立てて見事に達成しました。

We are so blessed with such dedicated, hardcore volunteers! Our day started with beautiful sunny weather—quite a surprise after yesterday’s nearly nonstop rain. But just as we were wrapping up, the rain returned. We even had lunch in the rain, but just look at those smiling faces! It was a wonderfully productive day.

Mahalo to everyone who worked so hard in the sun, rain, and mud!

素晴らしいボランティアの皆さんに恵まれ、本当に感謝しています。昨日はほぼ一日中、雨が降ったり止んだりしていたので、今日の天気を心配していましたが、予想に反して朝は晴天でスタートできました。終盤に近づくと再び雨が降り出し、作業後のランチは雨の中でいただきましたが、それもまた楽しい思い出です。みんなの笑顔をご覧ください！

炎天下でも、雨の中でも、そして泥の中でも、一生懸命働いてくださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。おかげさまで、とても充実した一日になりました。

また、ピザを提供してくださったCafe Pesto、配達してくださったExpress Waiters、そして水を提供してくださったWaiakeaにも心から感謝しています。
