We were also joined by a wonderful couple visiting from Washington and some of our dedicated regular volunteers, all of whom put in incredible work uncovering black sheeting from a massive pile of decomposing grass, spreading it, and clearing a separate section of Kiʻonakapahu Pond.
It was a huge accomplishment, and we’re deeply grateful for everyone’s hard work and commitment to caring for this special place. Mahalo piha!

今日は、ハワイ大学ヒロ校ダニエル・K・イノウエ薬学部の学生団体カッパ・サイ薬学フラタニティのメンバーがボランティア活動のリクエストを入れてくれたたお陰で、ワシントン州からハワイに旅行に来た素敵なご夫妻や、レギュラーメンバーの数名とも一緒に作業することができました。
何ヶ月も前に刈り取った草の巨大な山からブラックシートを取り外して、枯れた草を満遍なく広げる作業や、キオナカパフ池の草刈りを行いました。
力を合わせて、とても大きな成果を上げることができました！そして飲料水を寄付してくれたワイアーケアにも心から感謝！
この特別な場所を守るために尽力してくださった皆さんの努力に、心から感謝。マハロ・ピハ！

How lucky are we to welcome a new volunteer who is passionate about conservation!
She jumped right in, first helping to adjust the plastic sheetings that had started to separate and tear. Then, she tackled the invasive grass that had regrown in a problem area, preparing the space for new black sheetings. Her hard work made a huge difference, and we’re so grateful! Mahalo nui!
Later in the day, ‘ae‘ae was planted in an area that had been previously cleared—another step forward in restoring this special place.
今日は新しいボランティアがきてくれました。環境保全に情熱を持つ彼女はが手伝ってくれたのは、剥がれたり破れたりしていたビニールシートの調整や、草を抜いても抜いても生えてくる問題の場所をビニールシートで覆うための準備も手伝ってくれました。本当にありがたいです。マハロ・ヌイ！
午後には、バケツに山盛りいっぱいの‘ae‘ae（アイアイ）を植えて、また一歩前進しました。
March 11-12
After several rainy days, we were grateful to have such beautiful weather for our volunteer work today! Our community volunteers and Japanese visitors were joined by a group of students from University of Idaho, making for an incredible team effort.
Together, we focused on removing invasive California grass, both on land and in the water. With so many hands working side by side, we were able to make great progress. It was inspiring to see people from different places coming together with a shared commitment to mālama ʻāina.
A huge mahalo to everyone who showed up and put in the hard work today! Your efforts make a real difference.
A big mahalo as well to Waiakea for keeping our team hydrated!
雨の日が続いていましたが、今日は本当に気持ちの良い天気に恵まれました！ 地元のボランティア、日本からの旅行者の方々、そしてアイダホ大学の学生たちが一緒に力を合わせて、素晴らしいチームワークでした。
異なる場所から集まった人々が、「マラマ ʻアイナ（土地を大切にする心）」 という共通の想いで力を合わせる姿は、とても感動的でした。
ご参加くださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました！ 皆さんの努力が、この場所の再生につながっています。
Restoring Kiʻonakapahu at Lokowaka Pond Complex: A Transformation in Progress
Today marked our second day with the hardworking students from @uidaho, and what an incredible transformation we’ve witnessed!
The area where we’ve been removing invasive California grass and shoebutton ardisia is, in fact, an islet within Kiʻonakapahu Pond. And today—we finally reached the far end of it! For the first time in who knows how many decades, we can walk on it again. We can see the pond from this newly reclaimed space. What a sight! What a view! No longer suffocated, the land is breathing once more.
We are beyond grateful for the dedication and energy these students have brought to this restoration work. A special mahalo to Sandra Kelly, the University of Idaho Alternative Service Break coordinator, for giving us this opportunity to meet such incredible individuals. And an extra shoutout to the two returning students who came back after last year’s spring break—we appreciate your continued commitment!

今日は、アイダホ大学の学生たちとの2日目の作業でした。そして、なんと素晴らしい変化を目の当たりにしました！
私たちがカリフォルニアグラスとセイロンマンリョウを除去していた場所は、実はキオナカパフ池の中の小島だったのです。そして今日、ついにその端まで到達しました！ 最後に誰かがここに立ったり歩いたりしたのは、何十年前なのでしょうか。そこから池が見えるようになりました。なんという景色！ なんという眺め！この小島が再び息を吹き返しました。
この環境再生作業に力を尽くしてくれた学生たちに、心から感謝しています。とても熱心に取り組んでくれました。そしてこの素晴らしい機会を今年も与えてくださったアイダホ大学のオルタナティブ・サービス・ブレイク（Alternative Service Break）のコーディネーターであるサンドラ・ケリーさんに深く感謝いたします。そして、昨年の春休みに続き、再び戻ってきてくれた2人の学生にも心からマハロ！

Today’s volunteer day was filled with teamwork and progress! Many of our regular volunteers were joined by new faces, including visitors from California and students and a teacher from Matsusho Gakuen High School in Japan. With so many hands working together, the islet of Kiʻonakapahu is becoming more defined, and the impact is growing.
We are truly blessed to have such kind and dedicated individuals caring for this ʻāina. Mahalo nui to everyone who joined us today!
Mahalo to Cafe Pesto Hilo Bay for the delicious pizzas, Express Waiters for delivering them, and Waiakea for keeping us hydrated.
今日のボランティアデーも素晴らしい一日となりました！ レギュラーのメンバーに、初めてのボランティアも加わり、カリフォルニア州からの旅行者や、松商学園高校の生徒さんと先生も参加してくださいました。たくさんのボランティアのおかげで、キオナカパフの小島の輪郭がよりはっきりとしてきました。
このアーイナを大切に思い、支えてくださる素晴らしい皆さんに感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。
そして、Café Pesto の美味しいピザ、Express Waitersによる配達、Waiākea のお水、このような地元のビジネスの支援にも、心から感謝しています。

A dedicated community volunteer and an international student from Japan helped us tackle a problem area today by laying black sheeting, and planting ʻaeʻae. We’re so grateful for their hard work! This task began 2.5 weeks ago but had been on hold until today.
Two years ago, when this student was visiting Hilo, she and her friends generously donated to our efforts. Now, she has returned—not only to volunteer with us but also to make another donation. We’re deeply grateful for her continued support and connection to our work!
今日は熱心な地元のボランティアの方と、日本からの留学生が、しつこい草の問題があるところに黒いシートを敷く作業や、ʻaeʻae を植える作業を手伝ってくれました。この作業は2週間半前に始めたのですが、今日まで中断していました。本当にありがたいです。
Sen Sugiyamaさんは、2年前に初めてお会いした際に、ご主人やご友人たちとともに私たちの活動に寄付をしてくださいました。そして今回は、ボランティアとして活動に参加してくださり、また新たに寄付もしてくださいました。こうして継続的に支援し、つながりを持ち続けてくださることに、心から感謝しています！
March 24
Today, we had the pleasure of working with enthusiastic visitors from California who joined our restoration efforts. With perfect weather, a perfect low tide, and an amazing team of volunteers, we couldn’t have asked for a better day!
We harvested and replanted ‘ae‘ae (Bacopa monnieri) in an area that had been prepped and ready for a month. We also cleared some bamboo that was in the way.
As if the day couldn’t get any better, two flocks of nēnē arrived—one with eight birds and another with five.
Mahalo to everyone who lent their hands and hearts to this effort. And mahalo to Waiakea for keeping us hydrated.
今日は、カリフォルニア州からの旅行者の皆さんと一緒に作業を行いました。天気は最高、潮の引き具合も最適、そして素晴らしいボランティアの皆さんに恵まれ、本当に素敵な一日になりました！
元気に伸びた『アエアエ』（Bacopa monnieri） を収穫して、1か月前から準備していたエリアに植えました。また、邪魔になっていた竹を一部切り倒しました。
それから、２つのネーネーの群れが訪れてくれました。一つの群れには8羽、もう一つの群れには5羽。とても特別でした。
活動に参加して力を貸してくださった皆さん、本当にありがとうございました。そしてお水を寄付してくれたワイアーケアにも感謝！

Mahalo nui to the students from Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Campus Ke Kula Waena ‘o Kamehameha ma Hawai‘i and Ritsumeikan Junior High School for getting muddy and helping remove the invasive grass suffocating Kiʻonakapahu Pond. It was a beautiful day with a refreshing breeze—perfect for their ʻāina experience!
今日の午前中は、心地よい風が吹く晴天で、ケ・クラ・ワエナ・オ・カメハメハ・マ・ハワイと立命館中学校の生徒たちが、キオナカパフ池を覆い尽くす外来種の草を取り除くために泥まみれになって作業してくれました。素晴らしいアーイナ(土地）をマーラマ(ケアする)体験となったと思います。

We are so grateful that University of Hawaii at Hilo IS 150 – Kuleana & Community, taught by Professors Colby Miyose and Haylee Makana Kushi, includes the Lokowaka Pond complex as one of their huakaʻi (excursion) destinations, giving students the opportunity to engage in hands-on mālama ʻāina (caring for the land). Mahalo nui for lending your hands this afternoon!
ハワイ大学ヒロ校の IS 150 – Kuleana & Communityのクラスが、毎セメスター、フアカイ(フィールドトリップ）の目的地のひとつとして、ロコワカ池に来てくれるので、とてもありがたいです。今日の午後、草抜き作業、ご苦労様でした！

Students from the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s GEOL 360: Surface Water course, led by Professor Jene Michaud, visited the Lokowaka Pond complex today to collect sediment samples.
This course provides an introduction to surface hydrology, exploring topics such as the hydrologic cycle, climate change, streamflow, flooding, drought, water quality, water supply, wetlands, lakes, measurement techniques, and quantitative analysis.
Building on the analysis conducted by last year’s upper-division Environmental Geology class, today’s samples will further deepen our understanding of this wetland environment.
ハワイ大学ヒロ校の GEOL 360: Surface Water（表層水）コースの学生たちが、今日、ジェネ・ミショー教授の指導のもと、ロコワカ池群を訪れ、堆積物のサンプルを採取しました。
昨年の上級環境地質学クラスによる分析に加え、今日採取したサンプルによって、ロコワカの湿地環境への理解がさらに深まります。

Mahalo to the visitors from Canada and our local community members! With your help, we cleared all the cut trees and bamboo from the areas that become a shallow pond at high tide. Now, waterbirds can freely use these spaces.
今日は、カナダからの観光客と、地元のメンバーのご協力のおかげで、満潮時に浅い池となるエリアに一時的に置いていた、伐採した木や竹をすべて別のところに移動させることができました。 これで、水鳥たちが自由にこの場所を利用できるようになりました。
