2026: Makahiki Kuleana Kahakai

2026 has been declared the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana (Makahiki Kuleana Kahakai). Launched on January 9 by Governor Josh Green, this statewide campaign invites communities across Hawaiʻi to honor our shared responsibility to care for the coastlines where land, sea, and people meet. As we enter our sixth year of restoration work at Lokowaka, we are grateful to be part of this collective effort to mālama our coastal environments for generations to come.

On January 9, Governor Josh Green officially proclaimed 2026 as the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana at a signing ceremony at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol. This year-long, statewide campaign focuses on education, hands-on learning opportunities, responsible recreation, and volunteerism, encouraging communities across Hawaiʻi to celebrate and protect the rich diversity of life found in our coastal habitats.

🤲 Get Involved: Honor Your Coastal Kuleana

There are many ways to participate in the Year of Our Coastal Kuleana. DLNR has created a dedicated website where community members can learn about Hawaiʻi’s coastal ecosystems, find volunteer opportunities, access classroom resources, and explore events happening throughout the year:
